SJS pupils challenged in chess matches
Throughout the autumn term, Stamford Junior School has competed in four chess matches against local schools, involving over 25 pupils from Y3-6. The school has played host to Copthill School and Witham Hall School and has played away at Malcolm Sargent and John Clare Primary in Helpston. The pupils have focussed their efforts in Chess Club on the ‘end game’, with Stamford School students, Ollie Plant, William Smith and George Hawkins visiting every week to coach the children about such chess delights as ‘the lawnmower’!
The team’s concentration has improved each match and there have been some satisfying personal victories.
On Saturday 23rd November, SJS will host the South Lincolnshire Festival of Chess, and next term all the children will take part in the annual Delancy UK Chess Challenge.
