Student’s Life Changing Experience in Uganda
Stamford High School student, Kezia Andreae Y12, spent two weeks volunteering in Iririi, a remote rural village in the Karamoja district of Uganda, over the summer.
Kezia had to raise money for travel and living costs for the expedition as well as providing funds to pay for the building of new latrines, work towards a bore hole pump and painting materials. While there Kezia helped to paint a new mission house; repaint the interior of the village church and run a children’s programme for 180 youngsters from the village and beyond!
Reflecting on her experiences, Kezia said: “The people I met made the trip, especially the children. To experience the huge differences in culture between our countries was very interesting, particularly the way they treat animals; their marriage rituals; what they do in their spare time and how they celebrate. Now that I have been back for some time, it is hard to imagine that they are living such a different existence out there, while we lead our familiar everyday lives in the UK.”
