Pupils compete at Stamford Festival of Chess

 stamford chess Nearly 70 children from around Lincolnshire gathered last Saturday to compete in the annual Stamford Festival of Chess at Stamford Junior School. The children displayed great persistence playing six rounds of chess throughout the day.

Local schools came away with many medals and trophies between them. From John Clare Primary was the Under 11 Runner Up Lewis Jacobs, Under 9 Girl Champion Mia Permarker, and the Under 7 Champion was Cameron Cook. Hamish Gordon-Stewart from Witham Hall was the U9 runner-up and there were excellent performances from Sam Smith and Rori Rodell.

Thomas Smith, from Malcolm Sargent, was U10 runner-up and Scott Merriman from St Gilbert's Primary and Oscar Kendall from Grantham Prep performed well.

Joseph Saunders, from Stamford Junior School was the U10 champion wwith other excellent performances from Jush Gorania, Benjamin Saunders, Carys Attwell, Maddie Pike, Lottie Pike and Matthew Linsell.

Mrs Helen Britton, who organised the event with colleagues from Stamford Junior School, said: “It is fabulous to see the love of chess is as strong as ever in this part of the county. The children are amazing - concentrating for so long and playing happily together in between the rounds. We’re already looking forward to next year.”
