Debating team is victorious
A team of SES debaters argued their way to victory in the national Debating Matters competition run by The Institute of Ideas. The debates took place at the Cambridge Union and involved individual presentations on a topic, followed by judges’ questions and a challenging floor debate. Y13 students, Charlotte Brooks and Matthew Green, spoke first, proposing the motion “Individuals with unhealthy lifestyles should receive restricted access to free NHS treatment”. Their win against The Perse gave the Y12 team, Ed Emerson and Genevieve Balmer, a place in the final against Spalding Grammar School. A vigorous and closely-fought debate on the use of smart drugs resulted in a well-deserved vote from the judges and a special mention to Charlotte Brooks as one of two “best individuals”. The team are now looking forward to the regional final of the competition, to be held in Cambridge in March.
