SES Hosts Under 11s Rugby Tournament
Eight of the region’s best junior rugby teams competed at Stamford School on Wednesday to see who came out on top in one of the first tournaments of the season. Playing against the backdrop of the school’s state-of-the-art sports centre, parents, coaches and students looked on as each school entered into fifteen minute matches against each other. The fixtures included teams from Copthill, Grantham Prep, Wellow House, Stoneygate, Brooke Priory, Laxton Junior School, St Hugh’s and the Stamford Junior School.
At the end of the day, the Stamford Junior School team came third, with Copthill in second and Laxton Junior School winning the title. The teams and spectators joined together for the culmination of the matches, where Head of Stamford School, Will Phelan, presented Laxton’s team captain with the tournament shield. Thanking the large turnout at the event for coming to support the boys, Mr Phelan emphasised that while the school prides itself on a range of extra-curricular activities, rugby remains a truly “significant part of the school.”
David Laventure, Director of Sport at Stamford School, said “It was great to see the endeavour of the boys on the field, there’s probably a few stars of the future out there- just need mother nature to do her bit!”
Rugby continues this season with the Stamford School teams playing Leicester Grammar and Rugby School on 20th September, and the Stamford Junior School team playing again on 27th against Bedford Modern.
