Netball Team Secure Place in Regional Finals

Stamford High School Netball Success

Having won the South Kesteven District netball tournament, Stamford High School hosted the Lincolnshire county tournament on 12th November.

The SHS 1st VII faced Carres in the first match of the tournament. Knowing their game plan SHS started well and played composed netball, winning 10-5.

In the next match, SHS faced Lincoln College who put up a strong fight, but the home side shooting was on form and Honor Munro-Hall, Eliza Kay and Victoria Martin excelled in the circle. Lincoln College were yet to get themselves on the score board and SHS did well to stop them. The final score; 12-5 to Stamford.

The next two games proved crucial in the tournament. The match against Deepings School was neck and neck, until a mistake from SHS gave possession to Deepings who equalised with seconds to go. The final score; 7-7. Somewhat frustrated, SHS then played against last year’s regional winners, Caistor Grammar School. Excellent work in the defensive third from Maddie Munro-Hall, Molli Cleaver and Amy Briggs gave Caistor a tough game, but in the final minute Caistor took the lead 8-7.

With two wins, one draw and a loss, SHS’ chances of making the regional finals were all dependent on the final three matches. Priory LSST gave a good game but with Captain Phoebe Archer dominating the centre court, supported by Colette Russell and Isabel Chedd, the Stamford girls managed an 8-2 win. Stamford then went on to win the penultimate game against Bourne, 12-3, setting them up for the final match against QEGS Horncastle. SHS had to win to gain a place in the finals. Honor Munro-Hall and Victoria Martin shot well and the defence were commended at the end of the match, after winning 13-8. SHS went through as runners up with Caistor Grammar as winners.

The 1st VII will now play at the regional finals in Leicester on Saturday 31st January 2015.
