Young Sailors Selected for UK Training Squad
James Leetch (Year 11) and Jemima Leedham (Year 10) have been selected for the RYA 29er UK Transition Training Squad. There are 12 boats in the squad, which has been set up to train sailors for the RYA ‘pathway’ youth classes.
James and Jemima are one of the lightest pairings in the 29ers, and have only been in the 29er boat for a few months but have improved their ranking in each event. At the recent Ovington Inlands competition, they finished just two places behind a current National Youth Squad pair and four places behind the Feva European champions with just two points separating them all.
The aim for James and Jemima by the end of this year is to be at the front of the 29er fleet and to transition into the RYA UK Youth Squad. At that stage, 12 boats of under 19s will be selected based on the best prospects of winning medals at World and European Championships, the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships and of successfully following an Olympic pathway.
