Unbeaten 1st XI Progress in the Hockey Schools Cup
On Tuesday 10th February, Stamford School’s 1st XI team found themselves in the second round of England Hockey’s U18 Schools Cup, up against fierce rivals, Oundle School.
The game began at a frantic pace with Stamford starting well but Oundle creating more positive chances and forcing some last minute defending for the Stamford back five. However, Stamford had the breakthrough with a straight corner strike from Year 11, Arthur Franklin, firing it into the bottom left hand corner. Oundle got back into the game at 1-1 with a broken down short corner.
Straight after the break, Stamford struck again with a fantastic threaded pass by skipper Laurence Sidwell, which found Kieren Pegrum Milner one on one with the opposition goalkeeper, Pegrum Milner rounded the keeper and slotted in a reverse stick shot and Stamford were 2 – 1 up.
The game re-started and after five minutes Oundle had another goal through scrappy defending, nevertheless it was a good finish from the Oundle player. The game finished at 2-2, but with a result needed, the game went straight to penalty strokes.
The strokes went well for Stamford with Dan Sproul saving 3 out the 4 strokes, leaving Oliver Huxley to secure the win with the deciding stroke. Stamford School progress to the third round of the competition.
