Netball Team Progress to Finals of National Schools Competition

The Stamford High School U16A netball squad travelled to Leicester Grammar school on Saturday 28th February, to compete at the Regional Finals in an attempt to win a place at Nationals.

With four pool games in the morning, against some very accomplished teams, it was a rocky start to the day, but three games later and three wins, the girls were producing some excellent netball. In their last pool game the team suffered their first loss of the day, unforced errors made it difficult for the girls to get back into the game.

Going through as runners up to the semi-finals meant the team played the winners of the other pool, Oundle.  Having been defeated by Oundle a recently the girls were ready to give it their all and overcome their local ‘rivals’.

With only a few minutes on the clock, the score was level at 6-6 until the SHS girls found one more gear.  Effective attacks from centre court with Charlie Crombie, Emily Howard, Charlie Clayton and Alex Wilkinson working extremely hard and great shooting from Velvet Cordial and Emily Grace they were playing a strong game. Solid defence in the circle from Olivia Ellson, Deanna Alderman and Maeve Macdonald meant the team were able to overturn an Oundle Centre. Two more goals from SHS, leaving the score at 9-6, cemented the team’s place at Nationals, which take place Saturday 14th March.

SHS sports teacher, Miss M Higgins said that the win was; “A huge achievement and so very much deserved, they have worked incredibly hard throughout the season.”

Captain Velvet Cordial said: “I am extremely proud of how far the team have come together. We have improved a great deal since the beginning of the season and have always given our best against the toughest of opposition.”
