Unbeatable Stamford 1st XI into last four
Stamford School First XI Hockey team matched their rugby playing counterparts finishing their season unbeaten. They defeated all school opposition as well as Baane HC and Rotterdam HC on their February half term of Holland.
Following on from this success, Stamford School’s 1st XI defeated Uppingham School in an enthralling encounter in the quarter finals of the National knockout. Stamford started the brighter of the two local rivals with Oli Huxley guiding home a short corner to go one up. Stamford then dominated play with a further 8 short corners in the first half. However the second goal eluded them and Uppingham started to creep back after the break to win more territory and possession. The pressure told and Stamford, despite more short corners, simply couldn't find the second goal to kill the game off. Uppingham’s pressure eventually told and they equalised with 10 minutes to go.
Despite heavy legs, Stamford held out to the end to take the game to a penalty shoot-out. The fate of the side fell to Oli Huxley, Arthur Franklin, Jules Bramachari and Tom Macdonald. Penalty followed penalty leaving the crowd full of adrenaline. The teams went through the first stand then orders where reversed as neither team could take advantage. Finally the pressure told and to the relief of the away support- Stamford went through with an amazing 10-9 score line.
First XI coach Jack Cropper paid testament to his sides victory; "That was amazing! It was great to see the boys respond under pressure. Last year we lost to Millfield in the semi-finals, this year we really hope the team can go one better."
The semi-finals and finals will take place at The Olympic Park on 22/23 April.
