Student Receives Local Funding for Judo
Stamford High School Student, Sofia Palmer (Year 9), has found continued success in competitive Judo.
At the start of the school year, Sofia was invited to join the Cadet England Judo Squad. Since then she has taken part in a number of England Squad training events, in addition to the usual training schedule at Vale Judo Club in Oakham and training sessions in Cambridge and Walsall.
After successfully completing a Judo coaching course in March, Sofia is now helping to coach on a weekly basis at newly established Judo training sessions in Uppingham.
Sofia has also secured a place on the Leicestershire and Rutland Go Gold funding programme, giving her funds to help towards Judo activities and she recently attended the awards ceremony at Leicester County Hall. The Go Gold programme’s aim is to support talented athletes who are being recognised by their National Governing Bodies of Sport as being our future Olympic, Paralympic, Special Olympic and Commonwealth Games participants.
Sofia continues to take part in competitions and has attended 11 events since September 2014, and she will be competing at the London Open in two weeks’ time.
