Stamford School U13s Finish Fourth Nationally
Having been crowned county champions and winners of the East region in the spring term, the U13s had their National In2 Hockey Finals on Friday 8th May.
Drawn in a tough group, Stamford faced up to local rivals Oakham in the first group game. Oakham raced into a two goal lead at half-time, but Stamford’s response was swift; goals came through Joey Evison and Eddie Harper and the score ended 2-2.
Next came Dean Close, winners of the West region, and Stamford fought nail to hold onto an early lead which was secured in the final short corner of the game with Evison clearing off the line and Cato producing a wonderful low stick save to maintain the 1-0 score. Harrogate GS were next in line and proved to be a one sided affair with a well worked goal finished off by Connor Butterworth, two goals from Eddie Harper with the fourth coming from Joey Evison.
With 7 points from 3 games, Stamford were topping the group but still needed to beat St. George’s, Weybridge in order to qualify for the final. Stamford couldn’t quite find their free-flowing style and it was from a short corner that Stamford failed to clear their lines and the opposition striker pounced to score the game’s only goal.
Stamford finished runners-up in Group A and therefore qualified for the 3rd/4th place playoff versus Millfield Prep, where Stamford lost 1-2 and finished in fourth place.
Coach, Brendan Morris said: “The U’13s should be immensely proud of their achievements in the Spring Term and at the start of this term too! They have won four tournaments since January, remained unbeaten during the Spring term, scored over 200 goals and played over 45 fixtures! Well done to everyone involved.”
