Stamford Junior School hosts U9 Rugby Festival
Stamford Junior School saw a fantastic morning of rugby during the latest edition of the Under 9 Rugby Festival on Saturday 14th November.
With the rain thankfully holding off, 8 teams disembarked at mid-morning and played in two round robins formats. Wellingborough School, Witham Hall, Bedford Prep School and SJS fielded two mixed ability teams each and played some excellent rugby.
The event was supported by Leicester Tigers’ current squad member and former England U20 international, Charlie Becket. All boys present had the opportunity to share a Q&A session with Charlie who very kindly answered many interesting questions.
The Festival also introduced a ‘silent morning’ approach which was a highly successful initiative trialled by Yorkshire RFU and several other County Unions last season. The idea was for parents, coaches and spectators to all remain silent in terms of shouting instructions onto the pitch, cheering and supporting was still very much allowed, discussions on the side line were also encouraged as were between-match talks as usual.
Although this idea may have appeared slightly alien to many spectators, it is important to remember why youngsters get involved with and continue to play the beloved game. The outcome and feedback was extremely positive with all spectators and coaching staff supportive of the initiative.
Head of Sport at Stamford Junior School, Juan Gonzalez Mendia, said; “The event was a truly wonderful morning of rugby where all boys showed sportsmanship, camaraderie, respect, discipline and most importantly saw every child enjoying themselves.”
