Maths Trust Team’s Regional Final Victory Tops Off Recent Successes
The SES UK Maths Trust team came joint first in their regional final and have qualified for the prestigious National Final in London next February.
The UKMT Team Challenges promote mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills; they are designed for the most able mathematicians and provide the opportunity to compete against pupils from other schools in their region.
Qualifying teams from the regional finals are all invited to compete at the one day National Final held in London in February. All participants of this event will receive a certificate and the winners will be presented with prizes and the sought after national trophy.
Additionally, Stamford School is celebrating the achievement of Year 11 pupil’s Angus Pointer and Sam Rudd-Jones who have been accepted to take part in this year’s prestigious United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Mentoring Scheme which starts in October.
Each student is assigned an individual mentor external to their school who is usually a maths undergraduate or postgraduate or maths teacher. The aim of the scheme is to inspire pupils and develop their enthusiasm for Mathematics.
The mentor sends the student exceptionally difficult Maths problems each month which they have to solve. They then must send their answers to the mentor who marks them and provides feedback. The scheme is also used to identify potential candidates for the UK International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) Team.
Finally a selection of students achieved Gold Awards in the UK Senior Maths Challenge, these are; Teresa Tian (Y11), Marek Sklenka (Y13), Robert Stoddart (Y12), Douglas Douglas (Y13), Charles Smith (Y12), Sam Rudd-Jones (Y11) and Matthew J Smith (Y13).
Head of Maths for Stamford School, Susan Manning, said: ''We are very proud of our students, who have done extremely well to win the regional final, and are also very grateful to their teacher Mr Webb who selected the team and prepared them so well for the event. A huge congratulations must also go to those who have attained Gold awards in the UK Senior Maths Challenge and to those who have been selected to take part in the UKMT Senior Mentoring Scheme.”
