Seasons Rugby at Stamford School Finishes on a High
Saturday 5th December saw the curtain come down on another exciting season of rugby at Stamford School with success throughout the various sides.
Collectively the school managed to win over two thirds of their 152 matches and can boast three unbeaten sides in the 12Ds, 12Cs and the 16Cs.
The First XV finished on a high running in five tries at home to defeat Loughborough Grammar School. The home side started the brighter and eventually after good pressure from the forward line, a good pass from Gabriel Smithson set George Brown away to scamper into the corner.
Centre Callum Corbett proved a handful all afternoon for his opponents and minutes later cruised over after effective carrying from skipper Henry Wills and his back row colleagues; Isaac Troughton and Jules Bramachari.
Loughborough came back strongly and started the second half well, a clever move from their fly half saw them pull the score back to 12-5. This seemed to galvanise Stamford and kick them into top gear as they ran in three superb tries to finish the game.
Winger Ewan Hatt showed fast feet to cross over as did Smithson minutes later but they biggest cheer of the afternoon was for prop Mason Coulam who sprinted clear from 30m out after a clever move at the front of the line out.
Sam Evison sent another conversion over to complete the 34-5 win and ensure they celebrated their last outing of the season with a victory.
Captain Henry Wills was full of admiration for his teammates: "I'm very proud of the boys finishing another winning season. Even with all the injuries, they’ve worked hard and got the job done. 5 years at home without losing is a very special record and one that we are all extremely proud of."
Director of Rugby David Laventure was very happy: "It’s been a great season on the boy’s, staff and parents have all worked hard and enjoyed a great deal of success.”
