National Captaincy for Maddie
Back in January, Stamford High School student Maddie (Year 12) was named in the U17 England Netball Squad for March’s Europe Championships held in Belfast. Whilst attending the training camp prior to the tournament, Maddie was selected to captain the England U17 squad. A fantastic achievement, and a first for Stamford High School. The England squad played three matches over the weekend against Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. Their opening match against Northern Ireland on Friday saw a great win 61-19, Saturdays game against Wales was another win 68 -36 and Sunday saw a defeat for Scotland 78-22, culminating in England retaining their Netball Europe title.
Head of Netball, Catherine Raitt, was full of praise: “Maddie has worked incredibly hard on her fitness plan to ensure her place in the squad. She has determination, a real passion for netball and continues to be an asset to the School’s netball squad. We are so proud of Maddie’s captaincy and England Cap, and can’t wait to see what happens next. Well done Maddie!
Commenting on her experience, Maddie said: “It felt like such an honour to captain the England U17 squad and a massive vote of confidence after just coming back from injury. It was a very exciting opportunity and the girls were the best bunch ever!”
Head of Sport at Stamford High School, Maria Bewers, said: “We are extremely proud of Maddie and her achievements. The selection and captaincy alone are remarkable accomplishments but what a lot of people do not see is the hard work, passion and determination that Maddie has put into her dreams. Both of these wonderful outcomes for Maddie are truly well deserved and we are extremely fortunate we have her at SHS."
