SJS Chess Team Compete in Semi-Finals
Having qualified in February, the Stamford Junior School Under 11 Chess Team went to Weston Super Mare to play in the semi-finals of the EPSCA school teams competition. They played six games between Friday 13th and Sunday 15th May 2011 and achieved a bronze trophy, although they did not qualify to go into the finals.
The weekend was interspersed with other activities, such as swimming, walking at Cheddar Gorge, playing chips on the beach, playing at the arcades and lots of cricket and cake.
Team manager, Mrs Helen Britton, said “Throughout the weekend, all the children behaved with very good-manners and were good company, making it an enjoyable trip for everyone.”
Sailesh Sitarma was the Board One player for the team. He showed his loyalty to SJS by forgoing the chance to compete in the County Championships for Lincolnshire, which he probably would have won. He gained 5 ½ points out of a possible 6, against county and national players, some of whom are coached by International Masters at their schools.
