Ruby's TAG Team Triumph at Twickenham
Stamford Junior School pupil, Ruby Wright, alongside her team, comprising of pupils from across Rutland primary schools, have won the Chase Bridge International Rugby Tournament for Year 6’s, held at Twickenham across the 3rd and 4th September 2019.
Rutland Primary Schools Tag Rugby Team, comprising of 12 pupils selected from 7 schools in the area won a victorious clean sweep, finally defeating Italy to play Heathfield in the finals. This was a fitting triumph for the team, who worked hard over just four training sessions together before heading to Twickenham.
The two-day tour to Twickenham started on Thursday, with a day of historical learning and fun. The teams enjoyed a tour of the stadium and museum, followed with a sit in the Royal Box and run out from the England changing rooms to the pitch. The tournament was in full swing by Friday, culminating in an intense final whereby a nail-biting finish of 0-0 at fulltime allowed Rutland to win with a golden try within the extra time period.
Ruby, who is currently studying in Year 6 at the Stamford Junior School, has been playing rugby for two years, beginning her sport at Old Alleynians in London, and recently moving to Oakham RFC. Proudly, she was one amongst the only three girls county-wide to be selected in the 12 strong Rutland team.
Ben Wright, Ruby’s Father, commented: “Ruby was delighted to have played at Twickenham. She classes rugby as her favourite sport and wishes to play at the highest level she can in the future. At the end of this year she will move up into a girls only age bracket, and so our next task is to find a team where she can continue to develop and thrive."
