Gymnastic Success in National Championships
Two teams from Stamford Junior School travelled down to Port Regis School in Dorset to compete in the IAPS National Gymnastics Championships on 12th – 13th November 2011. As well as team successes, one pupil - Lottie Smith - won the top individual prize and was crowned Under 11 IAPS National Champion for 2011; a feat which hasn’t been reached by a Stamford Junior School pupil since 1993.
All ten girls competed well in the four events – Set Floor, Set Vault, Voluntary Floor and Voluntary Vault. The Under 10 team performed to the best of their ability and did very well to finish in 9th place, despite it being the first major competition for many of the girls. The Under 11 team put in some outstanding performances and competed strongly against some excellent teams from all over the country. Following an anxious wait for the results, the team were delighted to finish in 4th place and therefore win medals, surpassing their aim to place in the top six.
Individually, Year Six pupil Lottie Smith put in some amazing performances, which truly delighted the crowds. Despite being up against some very tough opposition, Lottie finished in first place and was crowned Under 11 IAPS National Champion for 2011. This is a truly outstanding achievement in this prestigious competition.
Coach of Gymnastics Trudy Smith said “This was an excellent display from the gymnasts and I am very proud of all their achievements. This rewards all their hard work, skill and determination.’
