Anna runner-up in Classics competition
Anna Hindmarch, a Year 8 student at Stamford High School, has recently been awarded second prize in a national Classics competition.
To enter ‘The Golden Sponge-Stick’ competition, inspired by Caroline Lawrence’s Roman Mysteries series, students had to create a short story based in Roman times.
Anna chose Pompeii as her setting, and the panel of judges was extremely impressed by the originality and structure of her story, placing her second in the highly competitive 11 – 13 age category.
Anna has received a hand-written card of congratulations and a £20 HMV voucher from the organisers of the competition, which will be awarded to her formally during a school assembly.
This year’s competition attracted over 350 entries across three age categories, from some of the most prestigious schools in the county and some from Australia and USA. Anna is to be congratulated on this outstanding achievement, particularly, since, according to the organisers, “The general standard of entries was high, with some superb winning pieces. In the fourth year of the contest, the inspirational imagination of the writers has never been more effervescent.”
