High School Girls Compete at Regional Debate
Rebecca Burney and Beth Cameron (Y13) represented SHS in the English Speaking Union Schools Debating Competition this year. They won through in the District and Area rounds to take part in the gruelling Regional Final, held at The Priory, Lincoln, in which six schools from across the region took part. Rebecca and Beth were not successful this time in winning through to the final in London. Here they are pictured with the team from Whitley Bay, their opponents in the debate in which they were proposing “This House believes that fertility treatment should not be funded by the National Health Service”. Well done to Rebecca and Beth for getting as far as they did, and for representing the school so creditably! In a recent Awards Assembly, Rebecca and Beth were each presented with a book of “Speeches that Changed the World”, in recognition of all the hard work and enthusiasm they put into preparing the three debates for this year’s ESU competition.
