SHS student is Regional Fencing Champion
Stamford High School pupil, Genevieve Balmer (Y11), has been awarded a trophy after winning Leicestershire and Rutland Fencing Union’s (LRFU) Women’s Senior Championships.
Genevieve started fencing when she joined Stamford High School as a Year 7 student in 2001. She found that her ballet skills combined with a degree of aggression and determination proved an effective combination against the boys! Although very few girls compete in the sport at this age, Genevieve has continued with her coaching, supplemented by additional Easter and summer training courses offered across the region.
During the LRFU Championships, Genevieve had to face over 12 other women in the pools in order to qualify for the direct eliminations. Genevieve then had an interesting final for the Gold medal where she came back from trailing in points to win the match overall. Genevieve was presented her trophy by the Chairman of the LRFU, Chris Beadling, who has taken over coaching at the Stamford Endowed Schools.
Genevieve is now hoping that she can retain her title in the upcoming competitions.
Stamford High School Headteacher Dyl Powell said, "Everyone at the Stamford Endowed Schools would like to congratulate her on such a fantastic achievement."
