Stamford School First XV Rumble On

First XV v The Perse Stamford School First XV capped of a successful week with a solid home performance in the 4th round of The Daily Mail under 18 Cup. After defeating Bedford School on Saturday, they won their 3rd round encounter with a resounding 12 try romp over Thomas deacon Academy. Saturday saw the visit of The Perse from Cambridge.

The home side started brightly. Tom Gulland broke down the blindside and after some good carrying from Henry Charlton and Archie Toseland, Conno Collett was able to dive over from short range. Right from the restart Tom Williams controlled the game and Bo Vergalen and Ethan Moss found holes in the midfield.  The Stamford pack were starting to dominate and prop Moss drove through the fringes to score. Staunton converted his second. At this point the home side appeared to take their foot off the pedal and a series of handling errors and poor kicks handed the initiative to the visitors. A dropped ball and chase followed that saw the Perse winger go into the corner.

The second half saw Stamford take control again and Staunton popped over another penalty to take them 10 points clear. The remaining 20 minutes were fast and physical but neither side were accurate enough and could not produce the points. In the end Stamford moved through to the next round with a 17-7 win.

Stamford School Rugby Coach, David Laventure, was pleased but cautious: “We didn’t really manage to get into top gear today which was frustrating, but testament to the boys they are disappointed with the performance not the result and they will work hard this week to address it.”
