SHS Historians Visit The Battlefields
SHS’s Year 10 historians visited the battlefields of Belgium and France to provide the girls with an introduction to the GCSE History course. They travelled first to Ypres where they visited the trenches at Sanctuary Wood, followed by the newly revamped ‘In Flanders Fields’ museum and then the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in the world, at Tyne Cot. In the evening they took part in the Menin Gate ceremony, where some of the girls laid a wreath on behalf of the School.
After spending the night at a hostel in Ypres, they set off to the battlefields of the Somme and visited the trenches at Serre, Beaumont Hamel, the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing and finally the cemetery at Pozieres. A number of the students were able to visit memorials inscribed with the names of relatives or, in one case, a great grandfather’s grave.
