Year 9 Paralympian Inter-School Competition
A team of four SHS Y9 pupils competed in the Institute of Physics ‘Physics Paralympian 2012’ competition at Uppingham Community College.
The team, consisting of Caitlin Findlay, Martha Radbourne, Collette Russell and Megan Stoker gave up a day of their summer holidays to compete against 12 other local schools.
They were set a series of both short and long practical experiments to carry out under strictly timed conditions. The girls worked really well together as a team and were at all stages placed highly on the ‘Leader Board’. After lunch, they then prepared a poster to illustrate some Physics concept from one of their experiments/investigations.
The girls were then invited, as one of the top 3 teams, to prepare and then give a 5 minute talk to the whole audience (and the judges!) on the Physics shown in their poster. While the judges deliberated, they were treated to a lecture ‘Physics helps us to prepare for Olympic success’.
Geoff Harman, Head of Science at Stamford High School said, “I was delighted that our team enjoyed taking part in the activities and that they finished a strong third in the whole competition. The team were presented with certificates and ‘goodie bags’ as a reward for their great success.”
