Are we Addicted to Technology?
Sixth form boys and staff gathered in the chapel at Stamford School for the annual staff versus boys’ debate, a tradition now in its seventh year. It is an event always eagerly anticipated by the boys, with heated discussions continuing in the sixth form common room long after the debate itself has ended.
The motion before the house was "This House believes that we have become slaves to technology" and this year’s staff team, Mr Mike Holdsworth and Mrs Edel McInerney, had gamely agreed to take on the proposition case, opposed by Yr13 students James Leake and Jamie Serjeant.
A very entertaining and animated debate followed, with both teams accepting plenty of points of information and a rhetorical tour de force from Mrs McInerney. The main speeches were followed by a lively “Question Time” style floor debate. As the votes were counted, the conflict between the teams about how we define slavery swayed the audience and the chairman, Joseph Begley, announced an overwhelming victory for the staff.
