Feva Squad battled through the winter
Throughout the winter of 2012-13, four crews from the SES Feva Squad, Frankie Pye / Tom Proffitt, Ed Whattoff / James Rigby, Sam Leedham / Jemima Leedham and Molly Naylor / Rosie Robson, took part in the Rutland North East Zone Squad Winter Training Programme. The programme spanned over five weekends, four of which took place at Rutland Water. Training consisted of theory and practical sessions, covering racing skills and tactics and boat handling in light and heavy winds. The last session saw all the squads from the UK meet, in excess of 70 boats, at Hayling Island on the South Coast.
During the first 4 weeks the sailors had to endure wind, rain and snow in temperatures below freezing. However this was nothing compared to what was experienced at Hayling Island. With wind chills of -3, the crews struggled to keep their boats upright with many nose diving due to the huge waves encountered. The sandbanks were often an obstacle also. Despite this, races were able to go ahead. Overall, it has been an enjoyable yet invaluable experience for the SES Feva Squad who are now ready to compete this season; in particular the RS Feva Grand Prix open events and the Nationals.
