First XV continue promising start
Stamford School First XV backed up their opening victory of the season over Stowe School with a solid away win over Oundle. Stamford started the brighter and good work from the back row set up an attacking scrum. George Cox cleverly darted down the blindside and Jamie Richardson fixed the full back allowing Tom Roper to dive over in the corner. Callum Crellin converted. Despite periods of pressure, the visitors never managed to convert their opportunities. Oundles enormous pack of forwards started to apply pressure of their own and the game turned into a brutal arm wrestle with neither pack giving an inch.
The home side came out fighting after half time but it was the great work from Ralph Offer and Declan Spaine that managed to engineer an overlap which forced Oundle to kill the ball. Crellin was successful with the boot for 3 points. This kick started the home resurgence and despite heroic efforts in defence from Henry Hives and Connor Collett, Stamford could not hold out and Josh Peters rolled over to get Oundle within 3.
Despite being under the cosh, the Stamford pack drove their way back into the game and after being held up short, George Cox dived over from the 5m scrum. Stamford’s defence was resolute for the last 5 minutes leaving them with a hard fought away win.
Coach David Laventure was pleased: “This was a fantastic defensive effort from the guys against a huge set of forwards, but the boys know we underperformed today it ball in hand. Lots to work on before there next match!” Stamford face Norwich School this Saturday 2.30 on Mainfields, all spectators welcome.
