Boys Compete at Crewsaver Sailing Championships

Two Stamford School boys, Tom Proffitt (Y10) and Alex Middleton (Y8), competed in the 2013 Crewsaver end of Season Sailing Championships held at Dachet Water Sailing Club near Windsor. The event is an annual occasion and marks the end of the RS season.

This year’s two day event saw over 100 boats on the water and Tom and Alex positioned 24th in their field at the end of the weekend. The weather was challenging with Saturday being cold, wet and with very little wind and Sunday being bright, sunny and blowing a gale. The race organisers had hoped to sail three races over each day but with such light winds they struggled and only two races were completed on day one. Despite this the boys logged their highest placing of 19th in race two on Saturday.

Sunday was a new day and blue skies and strong winds meant a very different sailing experience for the boys. After three more strong races they conceded their final race and came home, tired but very content.

The boys are now gearing up for the next competition, The East of England Zone Squad, which is being held on the 23rd/24th November at Rutland Water. Two other pairs from the Stamford Endowed Schools will also be attending this event. The pairs are; James Leetch (Y10) and Jemima Leedham (Y9) and Will Spiegl and James Hayes (both Y10). If selected they will train throughout the winter and then sail at the Nationals at the end of May next year.
