Sailing to Victory

Stamford Endowed Schools' Sailing TeamOn 19th May the SES sailing team took part in a team-racing fixture at Rutland Water against Oundle School and Uppingham School. The weather was windy, cold and overcast, which favoured our sailors who are used to sailing somewhat more powerful dinghies than those used for this event.

The team racing took place as a series of six races. Each school sailed against each other school twice. In team racing it is the combined positions of the team which, added together, determine which school has won. Each school team sails three boats so, for example, a team getting 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in the race (=9 points) will beat a team getting 1st, 5th and 6th place (=12 points).  The Stamford team won both of its races against Uppingham, and both of its races against Oundle, coming a resounding first place overall. This was very much a cause for celebration as the SES team has only ever won individual races before and never a whole event. All in all an excellent end to the year’s captaincy for Adam McBain (Y13) and to the year’s sailing for George Cliffe too.  The SES team comprised Adam McBain + Hannah Rigby, Luke Higgins + Oliver Perkins, George Cliffe + Eleanor Hunt-Pain, reserves: Kate Moore, Sam Leedham.
