Students Return to SHS for Annual Hockey Match
Old Girls’ of Stamford High School turned out in force on Sunday 8th December, raring to go and ready to take on the current SHS 1st XI to conclude the 2013 hockey season. Captained and organised superbly by former 1st XI Captain, Georgie Bendle (2009), the turnout from the Old Girls was the best yet.
A strong start from the Old Girls left the 1st XI a little concerned about the strength of their opponents as Alice Smyth in goal demonstrated some fantastic flare and commitment to her team in making numerous diving saves whilst Jade Rose consistently and easily distributed all attacking balls from the D. Lucy Hughes worked solidly with Ellie and Sarah Johnson in defence to maintain the draw and prevent the 1st XI from converting their attack. The midfield line of Rachel Richardson, Connie Wallwork and Lucie Orr worked tirelessly to maintain the skill and solidarity down the middle of the pitch but unfortunately the first goal of the game came from the 1st XI, 20 minutes in to the first half. The Old Girls came back fighting, continually supplying the forward line of Clare Taylor, Sarah Bloomer and Georgie Bendle some attacking opportunities. Sadly two more goals against the OG’s came in the second half which left the final score at a very respectable 3-0.
The mulled wine and mince pies went down very well with the supporters at half time and as well as the post-match buffet to conclude the event which has now become an annual occasion and a real highlight of the hockey season.
Lucy Hornby, Head of Hockey at Stamford High School, said: “Special thanks must go to Georgie Bendle for all her hard work and organisation in getting the team together as well as the long list of supporters on the side line. Thank you also to Mrs Powell for her top class umpiring.”
