Successful year for SES Sailing Team
The SES Sailing Team had a successful year of competitive sailing in 2011, competing in the BSDRA Eastern Region team racing championships, the Rutland Trophy, Itchenor Schools Week and in various friendly matches against other schools.
The team’s performance in the Easterns showed a dramatic improvement over previous years, gaining wins over Oundle, Kimbolton and Oakham B-team among others, and gaining a place in the Silver Fleet to finish seventh overall.
The National Schools Championships at Itchenor presented a significant challenge, and it was to Luke Higgins and Pete Burnett's credit that they finished eighteenth overall.
Four SES sailors also went on to take part in the 420 Inland National Championships in September, where they were competing against the best in class in this non-school event.
A good number of the team members, including the younger ones, got involved with the Thursday evening race series at Rutland Sailing Club, with Oliver Perkins and Ed Whattoff gaining minor prizes.
At the end of the season, six of the younger sailors were offered places on the Eastern Region winter training programme for the RS Feva fleet, preparing them for Nationals events, and ultimately for the possibility of going to the Feva Worlds. Two of the senior team members gained places on the Regional Team Racing winter training programme, again with a view to representing the Eastern Region in national events. These are both prestigious programmes with top UK coaches running the training.
In June, the SES sailing team also collaborated again with Oakham School to raise funds for the RNLI through a Night Sail event at Rutland Water.
Well done to the SES Sailing Team for their achievements during the year. The Schools are looking forward to another successful year of sailing in 2012.
