GCSE Latin offers obvious advantages in that it acts as a firm linguistic base for the study of our own language and of other European languages, while also providing an insight into how European culture has evolved. It helps to develop clarity of thought and an organised and logical approach to learning- as such it would complement both arts and science subjects.
The Latin GCSE course builds upon the work covered over the previous three years in school, developing understanding of basic Latin grammar and reaching a standard which enables the boys to read the work of Latin authors in the original language. The Classics trip to Greece or Italy is one of the departmental highlights. Boys currently in Year 9 would be offered the opportunity to participate in our proposed venture to Italy, taking in Pompeii and Rome, over Easter, 2015 during their Y10 studies. Latin pupils are encouraged to broaden their Classical education on a trip such as this.
