Little Genius Quiz Thrills Again
On Wednesday 24th May the Endowed Schools hosted the annual Little Genius Quiz, with Stamford Junior School’s ‘Stamford Smarties’ team being crowned this year’s winners.
After the success of last year’s inaugural quiz, 11 schools including last year’s winners Witham Hall, and more than 70 Year 5 pupils tested their knowledge on topics including History, Maths, Current Affairs and Children’s Literature. There was even a ‘Question of Sport’ inspired observation round which centred on a clip from the film Trolls.
Rutland Radio’s Rob Persani returned to host the event for the second consecutive year and was quick to pay praise to the quiz, “I could feel the tension in the room as we reached the final. Well done to all the teams, their knowledge was so impressive, and I look forward to giving the winners a chance to sit in on my Breakfast Show soon.”
The professional quiz company, Quiz Time, wowed the audience with their set-up of interactive buzzers, ‘lock-out’ podiums, sound effects and lighting, which all made for a memorable evening. The quiz was fantastically well attended by teachers, parents and other supporters.
The room buzzed with an almost tangible excitement as the pupils fielded the warm-up question – on Alfred the great- before the quiz fired in to action. The first part of the quiz saw all 18 teams competing against one another in a seven category strong, multiple-choice buzzer round.
The second half of the quiz saw the top four scoring teams make their way to the waiting podiums for the final ‘quick fire’ round. After seven minutes of back-and-forth points scoring, Stamford Junior School’s ‘Stamford Smarties’ team were crowned this year’s winners. They will get the opportunity to tour Rutland Radio’s Oakham studio as their prize. Oundle CE Primary School’s ‘Oundle Obliterators’ finished second pipping Bourne Westfield Primary Academy’s ‘Bourne Quiz Whizz’ and Oundle’s second team ‘Phazmacus’, who finished third and fourth respectively.
The event concluded with a touching moment as a member of Witham Hall’s winning team from last year, presented the trophy to the new victors.
Stamford Junior School teacher Fiona Sampson said, “We are very proud of all our 'Little Geniuses', who took part in last night's competition. In particular, 'The Stamford Smarties' who beat strong opposition to win the coveted Little Genius Shield and a tour of Rutland Radio!”
