Sixth Form Debating Society Flourishes
A large audience of SES sixth formers gathered in the Ancaster Studio at Stamford High School for this month’s twilight series debate. With speakers and motions organised by Year 13 debating captains, Giorgio Rubbo and Emma Hunter, the SES Sixth Form debating society is fast becoming a society run by students for students, with parents, staff and governors always welcome. The motion before the house was a complex one: “This House believes that feminism has become a movement against equality.” Both teams debated with gusto, with a brave all-female proposition (Laura Hector and Katie Frostwick) battling against Bella Mitchell and James Zhang. The main speeches were followed by a lively and wide-ranging “Question Time” style floor debate, culminating in an audience vote and a convincing win for the opposition. Next month’s debate, focusing on the topic of gun control will be held after school on Wednesday 18 November, again in the Ancaster Studio at SHS.
