Scientists Visit Washington DC
From 10th – 18th February, twelve pupils visited Washington DC for the AAAS Science Conference. The AAAS conference is a world renowned forum for the communication of cutting edge scientific discoveries to the larger scientific community and the media. The aim of the trip was to stretch and challenge the students, engaging them with post-graduate level science in a multitude of disciplines.
During the trip, the group performed superbly in winning the ‘Build Your Own Vaccine’ competition, which challenged the students to build an antibody specific to a certain disease-causing organism. Over the five days of the conference there was a vast array of lectures on a huge variety of subjects which enabled students to attend lectures that appealed to them individually; themes ranged from astrophysics to medical advances. The trip is aimed towards high ability, science students in Y12/Y13 who have the intention of applying for a science degree at university.
