Students Take Part in ‘The Science of Life’
Last year, two Year 13 students from Stamford School, Jacob Parrott and Elliott Philips, took part in the Physiology Society’s competition, ‘The Science of Life’.
The competition required students to design and carry out a research project on a physiological topic that interested them; Jacob and Elliott chose the physiology of pain and developed a project to investigate the ‘Effect of Profanities on Pain Perception’. They carried out some initial research, with willing and well briefed sixth form volunteers, testing their ability to withstand the pain caused by ice cold water. They submitted their initial findings in a report to the society and were selected to take part in the final in London. This necessitated them carrying out further research, producing an A1 poster and then presenting their findings to distinguished members of the Physiology Society. The boys were very highly commended on their performance, narrowly missing out on 3rd place.
