Workshop Hones Debating Skills
Year 10 and 6th form students from Stamford School, Stamford High School and Queen Eleanor Technology College enjoyed the opportunity to take part in a Saturday debating workshop in October. The workshop was run by expert debating mentors Andrew Fitch and James Dray from Discover Your Voice, part of The English-Speaking Union's schools' outreach programme.
The full day workshop began with an entertaining show debate by the two mentors, who displayed their own impressive debating skills by spontaneously taking on a motion proposed by one of the students.
The group then split according to debating experience. The beginners' group spent the rest of the morning learning the basics of debating format and technique. Those with some experience of debating were given an intensive tutorial in style and delivery, structuring a debating speech and debating strategy, enlivened by on-the-spot speaking games.
A highlight of the day came after lunch, when the groups joined forces to prepare for two short-preparation debates: "This House would scrap tuition fees for university students" and "This House would make voting compulsory". The ensuing debates were lively and engaged, with students from all three schools working together to put their newly-acquired skills and knowledge into practice.
