Young Sailors Perform at Inland Championships
Two Year 5 pupils from Stamford Junior School, Carys Attwell and Isabel Leetch, competed in the two day Volvo Gill Optimist Inland Championships at Grafham Water Sailing Club on 16th and 17th May. This is one of the major events in the International Optimist Class Association sailing year and attracted 282 sailors between the ages of 8-15. Carys and Isabel sailed 8 races over the two days in the 49 strong Regatta Fleet.
Conditions were very testing on Day 1 with strong 20 knot winds sweeping across the lake, causing waves. The fleet were held on shore initially, but the race committee still managed to fit in 4 races, with Carys finishing 4th and Isabel 10th in two of them.
Day 2 brought a decent breeze without the waves and the fleet were on the water by 11 a.m. Neither Carys nor Isabel had a brilliant morning, both beating one another in a race each, but not with a strong fleet result. Food and a pep talk brought out their resilience and they went out to place 2nd (Carys) and 4th (Isabel) in the next race, which Carys followed up with a 5th.
Both girls did fantastically well in challenging conditions, competing against some older, more experienced Oppie sailors. Overall, Carys came 5th and Isabel 9th. Both won a trophy, Isabel achieving 4th girl and Carys 2nd girl in the fleet. Well done girls!
