Stamford School Win District Debate
A team from Stamford School won the district round of a debating contest last Tuesday. The team, Jake Adams and George Sharman, both 17, beat off stiff competition from three other schools - Stamford High School, Peterborough School and Bourne Grammar School - to go through to the next round of the Schools Mace, organised by the English Speaking Union's centre for speech and debate.
The teams had to speak for or against a proposition, and were marked by judges Graham Peebles, a solicitor at Hegarty LLP Solicitors of Stamford, teacher Tom Duce of Stamford QE, and Stamford Mercury Editor, Eileen Green.
Mr Peebles praised all the pupils for the high quality of their debates, which tested their ability to speak in public, show a high level of knowledge of their subject and the ability to think on their feet.
The Stamford High School team consisted of Olivia Rowe and Rebecca Burney, both 16.
