Stamford Endowed Schools Sailing Success

Six of our Stamford Endowed Schools sailors took to the water at the Rutland Sailing Club Youth and Junior Championships last weekend and secured two medals for the Stamford Sailing Team. Ewan McAnally, Year 11, and Alice Lucy, the Sailing Team Captain, Year 13, were awarded Gold and Silver respectively.

A tremendous effort over both days of the eight Main and Regatta Fleet races saw students enter from four-year groups. Year 6 saw entry from Oliver McKee, who achieved 1st U13 place in the Open Skiff, a single-handed sailboat specifically designed for younger sailors.Sailors receive their trophy at Rutland Water Sailing Club

Three students, Louis Sidney, Ellie Hattam and Issy Leetch, entered from Year 10; with Ellie and Issy both racing in Laser 4.7’s and Louis in the Regatta Fleet.

Ewan McAnnally, of Year 11, raced to victory to achieve his Gold in the Laser Standard design.  Finally, The SES Sailing Captain, Alice Lucy scored Silver in the RS Aero.

Dr Andrew Crookell, Coach of the Sailing Team, commented: “The Youth and Junior Championships provided an excellent opportunity for young sailors across the county to challenge themselves in competitive sailing. With generally light winds over the weekend, it was the skills of reading the wind on the water, choosing a course that maximised this while avoiding other boats, and then maximising boat speed with balance and sail trim that made the difference. I was delighted to see Stamford students picking up both 1st and 2nd places: a fitting reward for a season of dedicated training and competition.”
