Inspirational Foundation Lecture by Rory Stewart
Rory Stewart MP OBE delivered the latest instalment of the Stamford Endowed Schools Foundation Lectures on Thursday 20th September. Stamford School was honoured to host the esteemed Harvard professor, author and politician. Three hundred people including parents, staff and pupils, listened to Rory Stewart’s fascinating talk about his journey across war stricken Afghanistan and the charity that he later set up in Kabul.
The theme of Rory Stewart’s lecture was ‘Engaging Other Cultures’ and he certainly delivered by giving the audience an insight into his personal experiences of Afghani culture and tradition. One particular highlight was hearing about a villager who guided him for 3 ½ hours through a snow storm to ensure that Rory was safe, before making the same trip back to his village! It was fascinating to gain a different perspective on Afghanistan and listen to Rory’s experience of achieving stability by supporting the local people through focused project work.
Since 2006 Rory has put his efforts into building up his charity, Turquoise Mountain, which is a non-governmental organisation investing in the development of Afghanistan’s traditional crafts and the rehabilitation of the commercial heart of the old city of Kabul. The charity now employees 350 Afghani people with only two international representatives who work in Kabul.
