SES Students take part in Twilight Debate

An enthusiastic audience of sixth formers, parents and staff enjoyed the first in a series of twilight debates held in the Ancaster Studio at SHS.

Challenged by the girls to defend the motion, “This House believes that equality for women has been achieved”, a team of year 12 boys (Joseph Begley, Matthew Kew and Matthew Green) used evidence from the law, education, employment and politics to argue that despite social pressures, equal opportunities exist for women and are there for the taking. In feisty opposition, the girls (Katy Phipps, Rebecca Phipps and Lizzie Purcell) maintained that sexism still prevails in social attitudes and that women are far from achieving equality in terms of pay and opportunities for promotion.

After some spirited rebuttal and points of information, followed by a lively floor debate which included the perspective of several parents in the audience, a vote awarded a marginal win to the boys. The next twilight debate will take place in December. Please e-mail or if you would like to volunteer as a speaker or suggest a topic for debate.
