Year 8 Trip to ‘ThinkTank’
The SHS Science Faculty took Y8 out on a day trip to ‘ThinkTank’, which is the Science Museum in Birmingham. There were six ‘hands on’ galleries for the girls to explore and two activities were undertaken.
The first was entitled ‘Genes to go’ where the girls used lab equipment and materials to extract, precipitate and preserve their own DNA. At the end of the workshop they each had a sample of their own DNA to take home.
Secondly the students visited the huge ‘IMAX’ cinema, to view a 3D film, ‘Tornado Alley’. They joined the researchers of VORTEX 2, the most ambitious effort ever made to understand the origins and evolution of tornadoes, on a heart-pounding science adventure. Armed with a camera, a fleet of customized vehicles designed to withstand gale force winds, torrential rains and unrelenting hail, and an arsenal of the most advanced weather measurement instruments ever created, they experienced the thrilling quest to experience a tornado’s destructive power at point blank range.
