First XV Rumble On
Stamford School First XV produced an impressive performance at the weekend to beat St Albans School. The victory was built on an outstanding defensive display rendering the visitors scoreless over 70 minutes of rugby.
The home pack had the upper hand at set piece and No.8 Declan Spaine crashed over from short range following a driving maul. Great work at the breakdown from Connor Collett and George Cox prevented the opposition getting any quick ball and eventually the pressure told. Winger Henry Martin was able to pounce twice on poor attacking play and sped away to two breakaway scores. The pack continued to go forward at a rate of knots and Archie Toseland and Josh Allen carried strongly. Ralph Offer punched a hole through the defence allowing No.8 Spaine to charge over for his second from the back of a scrum. 28-0 at half time.
St Albans started the second half more brightly and continued to fight for every ball. The game started to break up and the speed produced a higher number of errors from both sides. Henry Hives and Charlie Dunbar tightened things up and a good break from winger Martin allowed Stamford to get close and Skipper Connor Collett barrelled over. Callum Crellin popped over the extras to maintain his 100% record and take the score to 35-0.
Coach David Jackson: “The boys produced a devastating first 20 minutes which in effect killed the contest. They will be tough to beat if they can replicate that.”
