Old Girls Return for Netball Contest

netball vs old girls On Saturday 26th April, Stamford High School hosted the first 1st and 2nd VII vs Old Girls Netball match. Having had a three week Easter break, the Stamford girls had to blow off the cobwebs for the first quarter and settle back into their flow. Both the first quarters were great; evenly matched and virtually goal for goal (SHS 1st 7 - 5 Old Girls and SHS 2nd 9 - 10 Old Girls).

The Old Girls 2nd VII had gained a small lead at the end of the second quarter, but fantastic shooting from Tori Martin, Eliza Kay and Oonagh Macdonald meant that SHS were still in it with a score of 16 - 18. Over on the next court, the Old Girls 1st VII were putting up a fantastic fight, and at the end of the second quarter, the score was 14 - 13 to the Old Girls.

Both Old Girls teams pulled away in the 3rd quarter, the 2nds winning 30 - 23, and the 1sts 24 - 20.  Both games were proving to be both tense and really exciting; the atmosphere from the spectators was fantastic!

For the final quarter, the sun was shining, and the tension was definitely building! The 1st VII put up a sterling fight, turning over the possession to gain back some ground on the Old Girls, upping the intensity and excitement on the side-lines. A rebound from the tall defence of Jo Crombie and Amy Briggs saw SHS gain possession, and the ball made it down to Molly and Honor in the goal circle. After a nail biting miss, Honor sunk the ball through the net, and not a moment too soon as the final whistle blew about 10 seconds later! Final score 28-28.

Despite a fantastic show of team spirit, excellent attacking and defensive play, the SHS 2nd VII couldn't break the 7 goal deficit, and the Old Girls finished 8 goals ahead, with a final score of 38 - 30.

After the game, the teams went back to school and shared afternoon tea in the dining hall. A great morning of netball and the Stamford High School PE Dept look forward to making it an annual event in the calendar.
