Stamford School triumph over local rivals Oundle
Stamford School Rugby First XV have got their season off to a cracking start with back to back wins. Following an away win at Bedford Modern School last week, a few days later they entertained Oundle School in their first home game.
They started brightly and mounted wave after wave of attack on the Oundle line. They did everything except take points and found themselves 5-0 down after the visitors drove over from close range. Great work from Connor Collett and Henry Charlton at the breakdown got Stamford back into the contest and following a series of drives and offloads, hooker James Phillips was able to dive over in the corner. Again Oundle stormed back and scored from short range just at half time.
The pace and intensity picked up in the second half and it was Stamford who attacked early with Captain Tom Gulland sprinting clear to tie things up at 10 all. A large home crowd started to roar Stamford on, and it was their defence that was forcing Oundle into making mistakes. Ethan Moss and Alex Keys led the pack brilliantly and finally full back Kieran Staunton found his kicking boots to pop over two short range penalties. It was a nervous final 10 minutes but Stamford had done enough to come away with a 16-10 victory.
First XV Coach David Laventure was impressed with his charges, "They showed great character today. Oundle always present a fantastic challenge which the boys love to rise to. It was intense, physical and both sides were under enormous pressure - a good old fashioned schoolboy clash!”
Stamford enjoyed a great day with victories also for the 2nd XV, 3rd XV, 16A, 15A and 15B sides.
