At Key Stage 3
The KS3 curriculum is designed to:
- provide a broad general education across a range of subjects in order to allow pupils to develop interests in many areas of experience and to advance their basic skill levels;
- accelerate the subject development which will allow pupils to proceed with confidence to GCSEs and International GCSEs in KS4.
When pupils join Y7 they will find that some subjects build directly on their work in Y6 but that other subjects are encountered for the first time. All subjects are taught by specialists and through the three years in KS3 the school ensures that teaching within subjects has sufficient rigour and pace.
The curriculum construction for Y7 includes English, Maths, Science, French, Spanish, History, Geography, Philosophy and Ethics, Information Technology and Physical Education being available to both boys and girls. There are also considerable opportunities for pupils to become involved in practical, creative and artistic activities; they are able to study Art, Drama, Music, DT, Textiles and Food.
In Y8 Latin is introduced and the Y7 Science course divides into classes in each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Girls will also be able to choose one of French or Spanish to become their core language and a second language, from a choice of French, Spanish, German or Russian will be studied as an option.
In Y9, English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, a Modern Foreign Language and Physical Education form a compulsory core for both boys and girls. In addition to the core pupils chose five optional subjects from a wide range. This stimulates better teaching and learning in the final year of KS3, allowing a better balance between the subjects on offer, and smoothing some of the language differences between SS and SHS. In Biology, Chemistry and Physics pupils begin their International GCSE courses and in their other subjects the emphasis is on skill development in readiness for the start of their other GCSE and International GCSE courses in Y10.
The Year 9 optional subjects at SHS are:
History, Geography, Classical Civilisation, Philosophy & Ethics, Latin, German, Russian, Spanish, Art, Drama, DT, Home Economics Food, Textiles, and Music.
The SES policy is not to take the KS3 tests.
