French remains a language of global importance, spoken by around 300 million
people in 54 different countries across all 5 continents. It is used as one of the
official languages of many important international organisations and is the second
most widely-taught foreign language after English. Around 50% of English words find
their origin in French and the language itself is renowned for its beauty, romance and
richness of expression, bringing with it access to an unrivalled cultural heritage in
literature, science, music and the arts. As our nearest neighbour, France is not only
an important trading partner, with the sixth-largest economy in the world; it is also
the most visited country in the world, receiving over 75 million foreign tourists each
year. Studying French not only brings an important life-skill and an enriching
academic discipline, but new horizons in travel, in culture and in employment.
